Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Here’s lookin’ at you, Kid!

It’s that time of year.  Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are beginning their migration south to the neotropics.  They need to fatten up for the long flight.  There are more of them at the feeders and they are very bold little birds.

This evening I held a small feeder waiting for one to show up.  And show up it did.  It hovered a few inches in front of my nose checking me out before it decided it was safe to sip nectar from the feeder in my hand.

I snapped several  photos, but the bird is a blur in all but this one.

So, can you tell if this is a male or female Ruby-throat?

That is utterly fabulous, to have a hummingbird so close! I’ve found them to be more tolerant of humans than most birds, but… wow.

Oh – lacking the ruby throat, that looks like a female.
