Could Al Gore be right about hummingbirds?

Don’t worry!  I’m not going to get political here.  I just wanted to get your attention.  Do I have your attention now?  If so, read on.

I just received an email message from my favorite Ruby-throated Hummingbird educator and naturalist, Bill Hilton, Jr.  The message says in part…

“In mid-January we took the long drive to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where we encountered quite a few winter hummers.  However, these weren’t Rufous Hummingbirds or other ‘western vagrants’ folks have come to expect these days in the eastern U.S.  No, they were Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that historically bailed out of the Carolinas during cold weather.  For a photo essay about these hardy hummers and why we think they’re yet another indication of ‘global climate change,’ please visit the 8-16 January 2012 installment of ‘This Week at Hilton Pond’ at

As usual, Bill goes into quite a bit of detail.  But even if you are not in a mood to read all his explanatory text and regardless of your thoughts about global warming, you will be captivated by the photographs.
